Earth has experienced sadness and heartbreak. Some instances are harder to cope with than others. Death of a loved one can be the hardest to deal with. That is the very thing Conrad must deal with in Judith Guest’s book, Ordinary People. Con and Buck grew up together as brothers and best friends. Until, there was a boating accident that took Buck’s life. The story involves how Con and his family get through life without Buck anymore. There are many characters in this book that have had some role in helping Con cope with the loss of his beloved brother. Three people that have an impact on his recovery from the sadness are Berger, Calvin, and Jeannine. Berger is a therapist who quickly befriends Con, and helps him out of his depressed and saddened state. Berger is described to be an adult figure in Con’s life that he can talk openly to, and gain life guidance from. This has a huge impact on the way Con handles situations that could end badly otherwise. One example of this is when Con is at one of his evening sessions with Berger. At this particular session, Berger is teaching Con how to handle his anger, which is instrumental for his recovery. â€Å"When it comes, there’s always too much of it. I don’t know how to handle it. † â€Å"Sure, I know,† Berger says. â€Å"It’s a closet full of junk. You open the door and everything falls out (78). † This quote shows how Berger and Con really understand each other, and connect with each other. Con can’t get rid of his feelings without Beth or Cal getting upset or flustered. Berger just lets him do and say whatever, and he helps to decipher his feelings. Another example of Berger playing an important role in his recovery is when Con calls an emergency meeting with Berger. Con wants to see Berger because he found an article in the newspaper that said his friend Karen from the hospital had committed suicide. He then recalls his suicidal attempt and panics. â€Å"The thing that hurts you,† Berger says, â€Å"is sitting on yourself. Not letting yourself connect with your own feelings. It is screwing you up, leading you off on chases that don’t go anywhere (225). This quote shows that Berger really understands what Con is having issues with, and also how to help Con get through the tough times. If Con didn’t have Berger at that time, he could have taken matters into his own hands, and let his anger out on himself; instead of out loud to Berger. He could have physically hurt himself, and possibly attempted at committing suicide; following in Karen’s footsteps. Although Berger is a good friend and mentor towards Con, he needs someone his age, someone the same to Karen in gender; to help him get thorough the hard times. Jeannine is a girl at school whom Con meets through choir. She thinks he has a lovely voice, and their friendship flourishes from then on; eventually leading to a date. Males and females need a partner; someone to show love towards and spend time with. That is exactly what Jeannine gives to Con, which helps him grow out of his depression and longing for Buck. This quote takes place after Jeannine has heard Con sing tenor for the choir. â€Å"I’m getting to know your voice now. You’re the tenor who stays on pitch†¦. You have much better tone than Ron (101). This quotes shows that Jeannine is offering positive feedback in Con’s life, which is much needed. Con does not get many people congratulating him and praising him. This is important for him, and Jeannine gives that to him. If Con only had bad comments passed to him, he would never be happy in life. He needs that encouragement that Jeannine is offering. Another example of Jeannine playing a role in Conâ⠂¬â„¢s recovery is when Con and Jeannine go out bowling and afterwards to McDonalds. â€Å"And it is all right after that. She is right; she’s a lousy bowler but a good listener, a quick learner. He gives her all the tips he can, and she absorbs them easily, trying very hard. And besides she looks terrific up there, no matter what happens to the ball (169). † This quotes shows how Con is getting into a relationship, and using all of the energy he has to get to know Jeannine and spend time with her, instead of using that energy to think about Buck and be in a miserable state of mind. In a way, Jeannine is helping Con keep his mind off of Buck, and onto a more positive thing; her. Although having a female friend to spend time with is beneficial to Con, he needs a male figure that is close to him in relation. Sons need their fathers, and Cal has helped Con in fatherly ways. Calvin is Conrad’s father. At times, he is very supportive and understanding towards Con. But sometimes, Beth has a way of sweeping Cal away from their son. But when those good times between father and son occur, they play instrumental roles in Con’s life. This first quote takes place when Con has revealed to his parents that he quit the swim team. Beth is enraged that he has been lying to her and Cal, and the argument ends with Con racing up to his room. Once Con has left the room, Cal stands up for Con. â€Å"Ah, Beth, crissake, lay off, will you? I feel like I’ve been at a goddamn tennis match tonight! Back and forth, back and forth—(111). † This quote shows that Cal is more apt to understand Con and not to take any anger out on him, like Beth does. He understands where Con’s anger is coming from, while Beth is not at all understanding and kind. Another example of Cal helping Con cope with the sadness of life is when Beth has become sick of Cal treating her as â€Å"poor old Beth†, and she has left for a trip by herself. Con is now at the house alone with Cal, when they have a loving fatherly son conversation together. â€Å"I’m not disappointed,† Conrad says. â€Å"I love you man. † He winces, and this throat is tight, his eyes filled with sudden tears. â€Å"I love you, too (259). † This quote really illustrates how Con has really been accepting Cal’s fatherly presence in his life, and not just letting his words come in one ear and out the other. Con and Cal have a strong bond after all of their hardships that has kept Con on the right track of life. Three people that have an impact on his recovery from the sadness are Berger, Calvin, and Jeannine. But all three have helped in different ways. A friendly therapist, who acts as a friend towards Con, and is always open to listen to whatever he has to say. Sinnners In The Hands Of An Angry God God In The Hands Of Angry Sinners Jonathan Edwards delivered his sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, in Enfield Connecticut on July 8, 1741, the year following George Whitefield's preaching tour which helped inspire the Great Awakening. Weeping and emotional conviction among Edwards audiences came at a time of great spiritual thirst. Percentile scores reveal how well you did on the test in relation to other people.If you scored in the 90th percentile, you did better than 90% of test-takers. If you got a 40th percentile score, you did better than 40% of the people who took the test. The company must be prepared of parking and other logistics. Longer work hours for four days can have strains on company resources during that time. Without sufficient resources and other support, the positive effects of a compressed work week might be reduced or lost altogether. If Coastal Sunbelt would make a rotating 4-day work week, this can result to more maximized parking spaces. For example, half of the employees will work normal shift for one week, and then for the second week, they work only for 4 days. The second half of the employees will work 4 days in the week, where the first group worked 5 days. Consequently, this has led to nearly a dozen of states restricting credit card marketing to students within campuses. Despite such moves, credit companies have persistently remained aggressive in signing up students within campuses for credit cards (Chu). This is despite the common view credit companies should not target college students on their campuses while marketing credit cards. Arguments against Marketing of Credit Cards to Students within Campuses Marketing of credit cards to students within campuses is against provisions of Federal Law on credit cards for college students. According to Chu, Federal Law on credit card categorically outlines that no bank or financial lending institution should give credit card to students and young adults of below 21 years who have no steady income or cosigner. This federal law prohibition provides a framework within which credit cards should be given that is, to persons above 21 years with a steady income. Unfortunately, most undergraduates after finishing school end up with enormous credit, which may eventually lead to bankruptcy and at the verge of financial crisis. Based on statistics obtained by the US Public Interest Research Group, graduating college students leave school with approximately $ 4,000 in debts (Uspirg.org). The US Public Interest Research Group goes ahead to establish that 56% of undergraduates obtain their first credit cards at the age of 18 years, which is a period when someone cannot make informed decisions (Uspirg.org). What’s more, by the time such a student is graduating, he or she will be in possession of four or more credit cards. Credit companies have been forced to enter into unethical business practices in order to entice and persuade college students to sign up for credit cards. College students are vulnerable to cheap offers such as T-shirts, pizzas, and other free gifts. Financial institution clearly understands the vulnerability of college students, which they unethically capitalize on to convince them to sign up for credit cards (Chu). Convincing and enticing of college students do not only include gifts but also dwell in short-lived offers such as lower interest rates and other deceptive marketing practices. For instance, in 2007 the state attorney charged Citi Bank and its marketing counterpart, Elite Marketing with application of deceptive marketing practices to entice students in order to sign up for credit cards. Taking ad vantage of consumer’s situation and vulnerability is an unethical practice that may only end up ruining and organization. The credit companies responsible for marketing of credit cards to students should be prohibited from taking advantage of college students’ vulnerability to cheap offers. College students other than being vulnerable to cheap offers are new, inexperienced, and uninformed adequately regarding credit cards and in the market place. In this regard, marketing credit cards with only advantages will make students accept such offers without understanding how it works and demerits (Dickler). As a result, many of them end up incurring hefty sums of debts, which trails back to their parents. Prejudice in the Merchant of Venice Essay

Prejudice is a significant theme in The Merchant of Venice. This is expresses at various occasions throughout the novel. One of the most significant examples of prejudice in this novel is the Anti-Semitic views of the Christian citizens in Venice. A second act of prejudice in The Merchant of Venice occurs when the Prince of Morocco arrives in Venice. The third example, though more subtle, is the prejudice towards the Prince of Arragon. These three examples fall in to two major categories, racial prejudice and religious prejudice. The Anti-Semitic views in The Merchant of Venice play an important part in the novel. Without the Anti-Semitic views, the elopement plot and the bond plot would not be in existence. If Jessica were Christian, Shylock would have embraced the marriage of Lorenzo and Jessica. Religion, however, intervenes and causes Shylock’s anger at his daughter. The bond plot simply is based on religious tension. Shylock the Jew would not have been so hostile towards Antonio and Bassanio had they all been Jewish or Christian. The behavior in the court room also made a heavy contribution to the Anti-Semitism in The Merchant of Venice .The punishments for Jews were far worse than those given to Christians. Jews had seriously harsh restrictions allowing them to only be money-lenders. The second example of prejudice occurs between Portia and the Prince of Morocco. This prejudice, however, is not religious like the prejudice between Shylock and Antonio, but is more of a form of racial prejudice. As the second act begins, Morocco states, â€Å"Mislike me not for my complexion, the shadowed livery of the burnished sun.† (2.1.1-2). This was said to Portia to ask her not to judge the prince on his complexion, but rather that he be judged on what is inside of him. Portia, however, had decided that she would not enjoy marrying the prince. She expresses her prejudice by saying, â€Å"If I could bid the fifth welcome with so good heart as I can bid the other four farewell, I should be glad of his approach. If he have the condition of a saint and the complexion of a devil, I had rather heshrive me than wive me.† (Shakespeare 127-131) Her decision was clearly made and despite the Prince’s efforts to help her understand that he was just like any man she remained adamant about her agreement. The third example of prejudice, also racial, is towards the Prince of Arragon. The Prince of Arragon is mocked in various manners throughout the scene in which he chooses the casket. The Prince’s name added a form of comedy to the story. His name, Arragon, similar to Arragon, told the reader about his attitude and personality in general. The Prince of Arragon also stated, â€Å"What’s here? The portrait of a blinking idiot presenting me a schedule!† (2.9.58-60). This statement is also insulting towards the prince due to the fact that he can’t even recognize his own self. Secondly, he referred to the image in the mirror as a blinking idiot. The prejudice here is given my Shakespeare and added instead of being given on from another character, it is expressed as a trait of the Prince of Arragon himself. Shakespeare, in this case, shows prejudice, not a character. The role of prejudice plays an important role in The Merchant of Venice. This prejudice, however insulting and mean it seems now was not as badly viewed in the Elizabethan era. In fact, this prejudice was completely normal. The persecution and prejudice towards Jews, colored people, and people from certain nations was a regular part of daily live. Without the prejudice in The Merchant of Venice, the novels plot would be meaningless.
